What is a legal pi= tch (Minors and Majors)

The pitcher shall stand facing the batter, the entire pi= vot foot on, or in front of

and touching and not off the end of the pitcher's plate, and the other foot free. From this position any

natural movement associated with the delivery of the ball to the batter commits the pitcher to pitch.

The pitcher shall not raise either foot from the ground, except that

inforward with the free foot.

 

From this position the pitcher may:

(1) deliver the = ball to the batter, or

(2) step and throw to a b= ase in an attempt to pick off a runner, or

(3) Step = away from the pitcher’s plate. In stepping away from the pitcher’s plate, the pitcher must step off with the

pivot foot (the foot that is on the pitchers mound) and not t= he free foot first.

 

If the pitcher pitches the ball with his pivot foot off = the pitchers mound, or makes a throwing motion to the batter and does not pitch= the ball, this is an illegal pitch and the umpire calls a ball.
